Fernando Alonso was livid with Lewis Hamilton in Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The Spaniard looked to overtake the Brit, yet the latter closed off his path leading to his own departure from the race.
Over the radio, Alonso let his feelings known in the heat of the moment.
“He hit me. What an idiot! Slamming the door from the outside. We had a great start, but this guy only knows how to drive when he starts first,” said Alonso about Hamilton’s manoeuvre.
When the race was over, there was a lot of back-and-forth. The main thing is that Hamilton took the blame for the incident, although he did throw a few words at the Spaniard.
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, also made some sarcastic comments in reference to Alonso.
For his part, Alonso wanted to explain the reason for his message. The two-time champion was understandably frustrated because he was in second place at the time.
“The first thing is that I was surprised by what happened. I was angry. Anyway, when you talk on the radio, you talk to your engineer and your team,” he told Sky Sports F1.
“It’s a pity that sometimes everything is broadcast, because if it’s broadcast, it’s something you say in the heat of the moment.
“Whereas now, when everything is calmer, you talk in a different way. When you talk on the radio it’s normally just a comment to your team.”
Fernando added that the feeling that another good opportunity was slipping away also played a part.
“What is for sure is that I was frustrated. Unfortunately, every time we start at the front of the grid and we are fighting for the top three positions something happens,” he said.
“The good thing is that my car was strong enough to withstand the impact and I was able to continue. Lewis was not as lucky and had to retire.”
The fact is that this is not exactly the first time that an explosive message has been issued by Alonso.
“I don’t complain as much as people think, and I don’t do a lot on the radio. There seems to be a certain tendency to broadcast my radio messages live,” the two-time F1 world champion said some time ago.
