Former five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova revealed she watched a couple of games of the Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic match. On Tuesday night in Paris, Nadal downed Djokovic in a classic 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6 (4). Sharapova, who captured two French Open titles during her career, was asked by a fan on Instagram if she was following the French Open.
Nadal beat Djokovic in a classic
Last year, Djokovic defeated Nadal in the French Open semifinal and captured his second title at Roland Garros. On Tuesday, Nadal and Djokovic clashed for the first time in 12 months. Nadal, who suffered a devastating French Open loss last year, got his revenge as he overcame Djokovic in four sets.
“It has been a very emotional night for me. I’m still playing for nights like today,” Nadal said in his post-match press conference. “But it’s just a quarter-final match, no? So I didn’t win anything.
So I just [need to] give myself a chance to be back on court in two days, play another semifinals here in Roland Garros. [It] means a lot to me.” The match appeared to be set for a fifth decisive set but Nadal created a stunning fourth set comeback to seal a four-set win.
“Staying there mentally tough and finishing the match the way he did. Congrats to him and his team. No doubt he deserved it.”
