WWE has gone great lengths to push Roman Reigns into his own stratosphere over the last two years, and that’s not about to change any time soon.
The 36-year-old superstar is the longest-reigning Universal Champion in history. On top of that, he hasn’t been pinned in more than 860 days (and counting). Despite portraying a villainous character, The Tribal Chief has reached a new level of popularity among the WWE Universe his record-setting title run.
Needless to say, fans shouldn’t expect Reigns’ historic run to end any time soon. He is over as the top star in the company right now, and Vince McMahon seemingly has a long-term goal in mind for the Universal Champion.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Dave Meltzer wrote “It seems the idea now is to try and make Reigns into a new Lesnar, a guy who beats everyone and is portrayed at a level of his own, while he only works limited dates.”
There was speculation that he would retire following an emotional promo at last Saturday’s WWE event in Trenton, New Jersey. But as previously noted, Reigns recently signed a new contract with WWE that includes a reduced working schedule. Apparently, the new contract will have him work less house shows and pay-per-view events.
What’s Next For Roman Reigns?
It looks like Reigns will next feud with Drew McIntyre, one of the few main babyfaces on SmackDown who has yet to work a long-term program with him. The two have squared off at several recent house shows, and it’s likely only a matter of time until their singles feud commences on TV. Meltzer also noted in the Observer that the current plan is for Reigns and McIntyre to square off at Money in the Bank on July .
